Today Kel and I hopped on the very touristy cruiser over to the town of Ambleside on the far north shore of Windermere.

We were hoping for a bit of respite from the heat (overnight temperatures were far too high to sleep properly) but the air was as still and as warm out on the water.

After listening to the most bored sounding commentary possible, we arrived and were told it was a ‘ten minute walk’ from the harbour to the town. This was optimistic to say the least, even at our quick pace it took 20 minutes.

The town itself was nice, but nothing much to do there once you’ve walked around.

After a quick lunch we returned on the boat, just in time for a few rain showers which helped bring temperatures down a tiny bit.

In the evening we took Mum, Dad and Sue out to a restaurant called Jacksons Bistro, gorgeous food.

Arrival in The Lake District, beautiful and very hot

We set off at a relaxed pace early this morning on our drive up to the Lake District Town of Bowness on Windermere.

Despite taking the ‘pretty route’ we made really good time and arrived within 3 1/2 hours. Sue set off separately and use the ‘not pretty route’ and beat us to it by five minutes. We worked out she must have passed us on the motorway, or while we’d made a short pit stop before leaving the M6.

The Burn How is a nice, traditional hotel on a hill looking over Lake Windermere. We have 3 rooms with balconies next to each other with lovely views over the local wildlife.

Mum and Dad (as ever) were prepared and had brought lunch along in a freezer bag, so Kel set it up outside in the courtyard below the rooms. After the obligatory faff, mum and dad joined us.

We had a nice lunch and grabbed our first family photo in ages. It did need to be re-taken though as I looked like I was doing something unmentionable in the first. :o)

At this point we split up, Mum, Dad and Sue all went back to their rooms for a rest while Kel and I walked down into the town to take a look around.

The town is very pretty (and hilly). Even down by the lake the heat was almost unbearable. It’s been a long time we’ve wanted it to be cooler but we’re hoping the temperatures drop a bit over the next few days so walking around won’t be so exhausting.

After dinner we took a walk down to the Lake again and got a couple of good photos.

Kel and I travelled up to Kings Bromley yesterday. We used the Midland Mainline service instead of Virgin as it stopped at Lichfield Trent Valley. A smaller train but still did the job and was probably a fair bit quicker in the long run.

Today, Ma & Pa finally had their 40th Wedding party for friends and family (after months and months of planning!).

We spent the morning getting the house ready, tidying and preparing the food for the guests arrival at 1.30pm.

It all went off without a hitch with more than enough food (to say the least) and drink to go around. The weather stayed fine, very warm indeed, plus we were quite pleased the sun didn’t come out as we’d all have been toasted where we stood.
