The Banana says 'Hi'

The Banana says 'Hi'

Following a few days out at sea we decided to spend our last full one touring the local Rainforest.

It was an interesting enough day, our luck with the weather continued. We were picked up and taken to a local waterfall. It didn’t actually have any water as there hasn’t been enough rain this season!

Then we ate a quick lunch and set off on our 3 hour walk through the forest. (We later found out that we’d only actually walked 2.5 k’s so it was slow walking up and down and plenty of talking}.

We took our usual video and photographs but to be honest most of them just look like lots of trees.

My favourite of the day is below. I don’t know what it’s actual name is, but I think it looks like something…...

...a peeled banana with 2 eyes and a big smile. :o)

Ever seen a cute frog?

Frog

I completely forgot to add this picture from the Croc Safari. It has to be the cutest, tiniest frog we’ve ever seen.

We decided to book ourselves a ‘Jetski Safari’ for today. (Kel driving of course).

The tour guide picked us up at 8am and we had a 45 minute jeep ride up to Gloucester Island. The appeal of the tour was that we got to Jetski 60 miles around the Islands in all sorts of secluded places not allowed by any other operator.

After a quick tutorial on how to use the Jetskis, we prepared to start off.

Jetski

We soon hit speeds of 60 miles an hour, promptly whipping off my cap that Dave had kindly given me (sorry Dave, the cap is now floating somewhere near the Barrier Reef).

We had three hours of high speed skiiing around all the Islands. The highest tide they’ve had for years meant we didn’t see much, but unbelievable good weather meant it was a gorgeous day. It’s wet season at the moment, so we should expect to be rained on. Instead we’ve had blue skies.

Jetskis

For some reason the picture above looks like we’ve been photoshopped onto a postcard, it’s totally real though!

The Most Beautiful Place on Earth

Today was the day we visited the reed and were able to visit the place I remembered the most from my backpacking trip to Oz back in 1991, Whitehaven Beach.

We booked the Ocean Rafting tour. They take you out to the Reef using what would normally be a lifeboat, at full speed. Great fun.

Boat

After a pretty quick ride, we finally arrived at Whitsunday Island, the views from the lookout at the top were stunning.

Us

After taking in the view we walked down to Whitehaven Beach. The sand is so white as it’s made from Silica. It’s so fine you can actually use it to polish jewellery. The water was incredibly warm and refreshing.

Whitehaven

We sat and ate lunch on the beach, agreeing that it really is the most beautiful place we have ever seen.

A little later we walked along the beach and saw a Manta Ray, (the thing that killed Steve Irwin).

Manta Ray

A a little shoal of ickle Sharks. yes, Sharks. Harmless though.

Sharks

We cruised around the Island on the boat and hoped off with our Snorkels to view the reef and fish. Incredible, but we couldn’t take any pics for obvious reasons!

We spotted a Dory fish from Finding Nemo, but no Nemo fish to be seen.

We returned to Arlie Beach tired and toasted.

A Crocking New Year

We began possibly the strangest New Years Eve by going Croc hunting.

Okay, maybe not hunting, but close, sitting n a boat watching the little (or big) buggers as they, erm, do nothing.

Amazing to look at though, and awe inspiring. It looks totally still, and would never attack our boat, but if anyone had so much as dipped a finger in the water, they’d have been done for.

Croc

The Croc tour was really well done. Both guys presenting it were really genuine and cared for the environment. We ate a barbecue and Damper for lunch.

We pre-booked a meal at the Coral Sea Resort for our New Years Eve meal. It’s a lovely hotel right on the beach.

As they’re at night, the pictures we have don’t come up great, but hopefully give some idea.

The restaurant was overlooking the sea and the pool.

Pool

The restaurant itself was beautifully set out.

Coral Sea

We both got into the mood :o)

We also ate the best dessert EVER!

When we finished eating, we took a walk on the jetty outside the restaurant and met a couple of girls who had just got engaged. Needless to say we then spent the rest of the night celebrating.

Us

We watched the fireworks at midnight. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and a really bright full moon (only happens every 19 years apparently). We really could not have asked for a more perfect evening.
